US President Joe Biden signed the law restricting Chinese companies Huawei Technologies and ZTE Corp.

US President Joe Biden has signed legislation designed to prevent Chinese companies Huawei Technologies Co and ZTE Corp, which are considered a threat to national security, from obtaining new equipment licenses from the US regulatory agency.

The Secure Equipment Act, the latest example of the US government’s move to restrict Chinese telecommunications and technology companies, was unanimously passed by the US Senate on October 28 and by 420 votes to 4 in the House of Representatives in mid-October.

The signing of the law took place a few days before Biden’s planned videoconference meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Reuters had earlier reported that the meeting was scheduled to be held on Monday, which will be in an atmosphere of continuing tension over trade, human rights and military activities.

According to the new law, the regulatory board of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will no longer be able to review or approve permit applications for equipment that may pose an unacceptable risk to the national security of the United States.

FCC Chairman Brendan Carr announced that they have approved more than 3,000 applications from Huawei since 2018.
